The Seattle Gaels are extremely honored to be hosting the President of Ireland, His Excellency Michael D. Higgins next week.

President Higgins will be in Seattle on Thursday October 22nd and as part of his visit, traveling to Skyline High School in Sammamish to watch the students demonstrate their skills in Gaelic Football.

The Seattle Gaels have pioneered a novel youth development strategy for introducing young people to GAA sports.

Rather than launching a traditional youth league and competing with other sports such as soccer, baseball, lacrosse, etc., we’ve been working with local schools to help them incorporate Gaelic sports directly into their core PE curriculum. This makes the games more accessible, and allows ALL students in a school to participate without the need to join another extracurricular activity.

Gaelic sports offer a unique blend of skills that make them perfect activities for physical education – and the teachers we work with are seeing the health benefits, student excitement and high engagement levels our sports offer.

Under the direction of Gaels Youth Coordinator Terry Lynch and a handful of club members, we’ve introduced Gaelic Football and hurling to more than 2,800 students in area schools over the past year – and have worked to provide educational resources and assistance to teachers throughout the USA.

Below is a video we produced in cooperation with the faculty at Skyline High School that illustrates the positive outcomes from their implementation of the program.

Again, we are very honored to have this special program recognized by President Higgins and look forward to showing off the terrific progress the students at Skyline have made, and highlighting the successes we’ve had in introducing these great sports to a new generation of American students.
