Hello Gaels and Friends,
Yesterday (April 8) we received an email from the Seattle Parks & Rec folks letting us know that all programs and activities scheduled for the parks through June 20th have been cancelled. While I’m sure this comes as no surprise, it’s still a hard pill to swallow to have confirmed for us that the June 6th Emerald City Cup will not be happening. This is, of course, the smartest possible thing. And the Gaels committee had already been discussing taking that step ourselves.
Reality demonstrates that there isn’t much likelihood that we will have a season this year. Jumping the gun on returning to social activities could be devastating to the progress our communities are making to stamp out the virus’ spread. The people who run the Olympics, Wimbledon, NBA, The French Open, WOMAD, SXSW, Glastonbury, etc understand that cancelling from the top is the responsible thing to do to keep our population safe. We are looking to the USGAA for similar leadership so that the pressure is not on individual clubs and players to determine whether or not they will risk participation.
The committee and managers will meet soon to more formally discuss the possibilities for the rest of the year.
Stay safe. Be well. Keep fit. Find a good wall to work on your touches. Keep challenging each other with video skill tests. Continue finding ways to enjoy social solidarity in these times of physical distancing. Eventually this will end and we’ll be back on the pitch. Together.
Up the Gaels!
Slán go fóill,
Joseph
